Most roots-conscious guitarists have heard of Michael Bloomfield, the brawling blues master whose innovative playing helped immortalize the beauty of the ’Burst – the Gibson Les Paul Standard – and brought the genre into the ’60s rock counterculture. But these days, 19 years after his untimely death, there may be more awareness of his troubled life of music-fueled apexes and drug-and-illness fueled valleys than of his actual recorded performances.

Rumors spread about Rolling Stones and Aerosmith tours and original Runaways members Cherie Currie and Joan Jett got back together to record “Cherry Bomb” for a new Guitar Hero. Here at Gibson, we decided that the time had come to count down the Top 50 Guitar Albums of All Time.

It all started on a hot July evening in the English seaside town of Blackpool. The Rolling Stones were set to perform at the Empress Ballroom, a 3000 capacity concert venue inside the massive Winter Gardens complex. The Stones, by this point, were gathering a solid, even ravenous following after the release of their debut album just three months before.

You won’t find an album on this list from this decade, and none from the ’80s or ’90s either, but that’s because nothing’s been the same since vinyl bowed out to welcome compact discs to the stage.

Despite Def Leppard taking a well-deserved year off after more than five years of non-stop sold-out touring, Lep frontman Joe Elliott remains busy with a new solo project, Down ‘n’ Outz, which has already produced a hit single. Joe took some time out of his busy schedule to drop by the Gibson Showroom in Los Angeles to talk to Gibson.com about his new album, the secret to Def Leppard's remarkable longevity and success, and the benefits of hanging out in bars after hours with Ian Hunter.

When “I Will Follow” and “A Day Without Me” came ripping out of radios in late 1980, it was obvious the band that recorded these singles was far too ambitious to be pigeon-holed as new wave, post-punk or simply pop. The guitar lines – a jittery Morse Code of single notes sculpted into a hook for “A Day Without Me,” the shimmering chords of “I Will Follow,” the delay-swabbed sound of both that crossed the line from mere effect into melody – alone advertised a broad creative sweep, and the lyrics aimed to define what it means to be human, albeit from a superbly youthful viewpoint.

Of all the albums that formed the soundtrack to 1967’s “Summer of Love,” The Doors is the one least tethered to its time. More importantly, The Doors’ self-titled disc remains one of the greatest debuts in rock history. Spanning a startling range of styles – swampy blues-rock, psychedelic jazz, hard-coated pop-rock, and even German cabaret – the album was ambitious in scope, but also loaded with visceral energy. To this day, few albums sound more inspired.

After leaving Triumph in 1988, Rik Emmett also left the beaten path for more esoteric pursuits. He declined invitations to join other big-name stadium acts and focused on a smaller-scale, but more artistically satisfying solo career. Over the past two decades, he has dabbled in flamenco, classical, blues and jazz — even winning the Canadian Smooth Jazz Award for Guitarist of the Year in 2005. In Part 2 of The Gibson Interview, Emmett talks about the reasoning behind those decisions and his collection of Gibson guitars.

Once again, it was an eventful week in the world of music. Legends of both country and power pop passed away. Joe Perry was a bit luckier, walking away from a motorcycle accident. There was news of a mini-Pink Floyd reunion, and U2 and AC/DC made a lot of money. Pearl Jam talked retirement, even as Jerry Lee Lewis announced a new, all-star album. And Gibson officially changed its Twitter address!
