Boys Like Girls Bassist Bryan Donahue takes a close look at the new American Deluxe Precision Bass®. In town to play the Venue later tonight with All Time Low, Good Charlotte and The Ready Set, Boys Like Girls bassist Bryan Donahue dropped by Fender headquarters in Scottsdale on Wednesday afternoon, sharing with us how Fender first became a part of his life. “Being 13, there was a Guitar Center a couple of towns over and that’s where everyone went before band practice,” he said. “We’d need strings, picks, drumsticks or whatever before practice or a gig and I’d always go off into the bass room and take a Jazz Bass off the wall. Finally I just bought two. I saved up all my money and was like, ‘Cool, I’ve got one and a backup.’” But eventually Donahue decided he needed something different and as you’ll see if you catch him on the road this summer, he’s switched over from the Jazz Bass to an American Standard P-Bass. “In the first couple of tours with Boys Like Girls, I had an old ’72 Jazz Bass and the thing sounds phenomenal but then I started to feel real bad because I was beating the ever-loving crap out of it,” he shared. “I decided to leave it at home and to give a P-Bass a try. The body felt a little more comfortable. I wanted something not so tight sounding pickup wise. The P-Bass altogether, my sound guy loved it, and I loved it.” Boys Like Girls are co-headliners for this summer’s Bamboozle Roadshow, which next hits the Joint in Las Vegas. “It’s been awesome,” he said of Bamboozle. “All of the bands have either toured with one another or just buddied up to one another over the last couple of years and we all just got thrown into this tour so even day one, down in Maryland, everyone just piled out of their busses. It’s kind of like the 4th of July every day. A lot of beer drinking, a lot of sports – basketball, cornhole, ping-pong— you name it. We’re enjoying the summer.”
