Another week of dramatic news, anticipation and rock and roll craziness in the mad, mad world of music. First off, Ringo received a surprise visitor at his birthday concert. That’s right, it was Paul McCartney, who rocked through “Birthday” for his old chum. The always non-conformist Prince announced that the Internet was dead and Ray Davies talked about The Kinks getting back together as a tribute to their original bass player, Pate Quaife, who died recently.

Sunday Morning Coming Down: Paul Simon, Graceland
Watching the glorious collage of multicultural diversity being beamed from South Africa during this year’s World Cup shindig it’s easy to forget that, twenty-five years ago, South Africa was a very different place. Nelson Mandela was still serving his 27 years in prison and the country still lived under apartheid, the intuition of legalized racism that governed South Africa from 1948 to 1994.

The 5 Best Rock Concerts of All Time
A great concert experience isn’t very different from a great first date. Even just retrieving your car from the parking garage afterwards, you feel more alive than you did before. Later, lying in bed, ears still ringing, you trace over every detail, and in the sober light of the next day it doesn’t even seem real.

The Gibson Interview: Denny Laine (Part Two)
When Denny Laine left The Moody Blues, London was as good a place as any for a talented young musician with good credentials to find like-minded creative folk. Over the next five years, he made records under various monikers with members of The Move and, later, Ginger Baker. Eventually, Laine received an invitation from an old friend, who was looking to create a new band. The old friend was, of course, Paul McCartney. And his new band, Wings, would go on to be one of the biggest bands in the world over the coming decade.

Guided By Voices announced plans to reunite for a Matador Records celebration, and Rush kicked off a massive tour, hot on the heels of a hit DVD release. Anglo music haven BBC 6 lived to see another day, and Black Sabbath’s Bill Ward looked back on a career well rocked. And that was just the beginning ...

The Gibson Video Interview: Jay Jay French of Twisted Sister
The one thing Twisted Sister has never been accused of is being boring. And guitarist Jay Jay French certainly lives up to expectations, whether he’s expounding on his singer’s resemblance to a certain Sex and the City star, recalling the shame of being “whored out” to British Embassy security or bemoaning the dangers of “middle-age transvestite metal.” We caught up with one of rock’s finest raconteurs recently at the New York City Gibson Showroom.
