Kris Allen and Band Visit Fender HQ
Ryland, Andrew, Kris, Cale & Chris Kris Allen and his bandmates — drummer Ryland David-Burton Steen, keyboardist/guitarist Cale Mills, bassist Chris Torres and guitarist Andrew DeRoberts — passed part of their off day hanging out at Fender Headquarters in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Tuesday. Although longtime friends with Mills, Allen picked up the rest of his new bandmates by holding auditions out in Los Angeles. “I hate saying, ‘We had tryouts for these guys,’” says Allen. “It just sounds weird because we all are friends now. Maybe it’s just the caliber of musicians but I feel like we all click really well and things happened very quickly. “No fights yet,” Allen adds with the crooked grin that won over millions of American Idol voters. Although he’s made a slew of television appearances since his big win and enjoyed one-off concert performances, this summer marks Allen’s first full-fledged tour — a combination of smaller headlining shows and some supporting role dates with Keith Urban, Maroon 5 and Barenaked Ladies. “Right now, we’ve only done the one Keith Urban show in Vegas which was packed and just awesome,” says Allen. “And then we do the headline stuff, which is a little smaller, more intimate and it’s fun because we get to play for a long time and get to entertain and have a good time.” “The cool thing about headlining shows is that you kind of get to take the audience on a journey with a set if you will,” adds DeRoberts. “When you open, it’s kind of all killer, no filler, get the audience revved up with whoever you are helping out that night.” But even the headlining shows offer Allen and company a little variety.
“We have a good time putting sets together and figuring out the vibe for the show because every show is different,” says Allen. “We played at Six Flags the other night and it was a bunch of pre-teen girls. That was a totally different vibe than from last night when we played in Albuquerque, which was a small theater with more grownups there. So when to play the Radiohead cover (“Paranoid Androids”) and when not to, for instance.” And for Steen, a former member of ska punk band Reel Big Fish, the best part of touring has been getting to see Allen’s fan contingency in person. “This is definitely Kris’s deal but even being part of the band, it’s cool to see who these fans are,” he says. “He’s got all of these fans from doing the whole American Idol thing and he’s sold all of these records and singles, but if you aren’t out there playing shows, it’s like ‘Who are these people?’ So it’s cool to see who these fans are, and I’d say it’s about 75 per cent girls and then a bunch of guys whose girlfriends drug them along.” “Yeah, but the guys are leaving being fans,” Allen chimes in, immediately getting concurrence from his drummer. “Really, that is the cool part,” Steen admits. “After a few shredding solos and we rock out, there’s like this response of ‘Okay, this is actually cool.’” Allen will next roll through Tucson, Ariz., tonight with a show at the Rialto Theatre. “I think after that we start flying a lot,” he offers. “I do the national anthem at the Mets game in New York, Yankee Stadium and then Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.” So catch them out on the road over the next several weeks, and also, be sure to check out his latest single “The Truth,” which features vocals from Train’s Pat Monahan. “It was the decision to put him on the single after we had done the album version so he went into another studio and did his thing before I had the chance to even actually meet him,” says Allen. “But we played a show together and did the song and it was actually really cool. He’s got an incredible voice; he killed it.” Seeing how the song is a breakup song, Allen was initially skeptical of the pairing. “I didn’t want it to seem like we were seeing to each other because that’s not what the song is about,” he says. “But it turned out alright.” “Maybe Pat was the dude who started dating the girl you broke up with,” offers Steen. “Oh, so I’m pissed at him?” asks Allen. “Yeah,” answers Steen, “and he’s apologizing for taking your girl.” “Or maybe she broke up with both of us,” Allen suggests. As they say, to each his own! So listen here and decide for yourself.
Fun Fact about Chris Torres: He used to work at Moonlight Music store in San Diego, helping sell Fender guitars! Thanks Chris!!

Anthrax Bassist & Fender Donate Gear to 15 NYC Public Schools
Frank Bello to jam with elementary school students and help national nonprofit Little Kids Rock restore and revitalize music education in public schools.
While funding for music and arts programs are being cut across the country, notably in New York City, Little Kids Rock, a leading nonprofit provider of free musical instruments and free lessons in the United States, is teaming with Fender and rock stars to put music education back into public schools. On Friday, March 26, Anthrax bassist Frank Bello will donate Fender electric basses and amps to 15 NYC public city schools to complement the Little Kids Rock guitar classes that are already thriving. “We are so proud to have Mr. Bello as a champion of our cause,” said David Wish, Little Kids Rock founder and executive director. “With his help, and the continued support of our longtime partner Fender, we will be able to reach even more children in New York City. In addition to delivering a free Fender® electric bass and amp to the students of P.S. 11 Highbridge School, Mr. Bello will answer all of the kids’ questions and jam with them on some of their favorite songs. Little Kids Rock launched in New York City in 2002 and has delivered nearly a million dollars-worth of free instruments, curriculum and resources that currently reach thousands of New York City public school children. MARCH 30 UPDATE – Here’s a few photos from Bello’s visit. Clearly, a wonderful time was had by all.

Fender Guitar Saved by SKB Case
A customer of New Braunfels Music put his American Standard exclusively-molded SKB guitar case to the test. According to the music store’s sales associate Kevin Kline, the case fell out of the back of a truck that had left its tailgate down. Not realizing the case (and its precious new guitar) was on the ground, the driver accidentally backed up over it. “The strat inside didn’t have a scratch on it,” reports Kline. FYI, our American Deluxe models also come with the SKB cases.

Fender in freecreditreport.com Commercial
I recently saw a tweet out there in cyber land talking about Fender instruments and straps being used in the freecreditreport.com commercials, and for the rest of the day I had the jingle stuck in my head. So, thought I’d share the experience. Watch it below and I’ll just bet you end up singing it a few times later today, too!

Designed as a floor controller for RH450 bass amp, RC4 offers you a tuner indicator, a mute switch, and three preset foot switches to recall the three user memories. RC4 is conveniently powered from the amp and is a great addition to the system.

Most bass players know that integrated compressors generally dont sound that good. A regular compressor tends to be dominated by the lower string, but RH450's SpectraComp technology allows virtually per string multi-band compression that evens out the compression across all strings.
