Beck’s Latest Masterpiece in Stores Today
Grammy-winning guitarist Jeff Beck’s new album Emotion & Commotion today sees it street release, and is now available as an MP3 at Amazon for only $4.99. Beck recorded his first studio album in seven years late last year at Sarm Studios in London with award-winning producers Steve Lipson and Trevor Horn. To create the album’s diverse sound, Beck used a number of musicians, including appearances by frequent collaborators Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards), and Tal Wilkenfeld (bass). The album also includes contributions from a trio of singers: Imelda May (“Lilac Wine”), Olivia Safe (“Elegy For Dunkirk”), and Grammy-winner Joss Stone (“I Put A Spell On You” and “There’s No Other Me”). To complement the innovative tones he coaxes from his guitar, Beck recorded with a 64-piece orchestra on songs that range from Puccini’s immortal aria “Nessun Dorma” and “Elegy For Dunkirk” from the film Atonement to “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from The Wizard Of Oz and Jeff Buckley’s interpretation of “Corpus Christi Carol.” The idea of pairing his guitar with an orchestra evolved from the version of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 he recorded a few years ago. “It turned out amazingly well, but I didn’t want to commit to an entire album of classical music,” said Beck. “What appealed to me instead was the idea of bringing together these seemingly contradictory sounds on different kinds of nonclassical music.” Emotion & Commotion Track Listing: 1. “Corpus Christi Carol” 2. “Hammerhead” 3. “Never Alone” 4. “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” 5. “I Put A Spell On You” featuring Joss Stone 6. “Serene” 7. “Lilac Wine” featuring Imelda May 8. “Nessun Dorma” 9. “There’s No Other Me” featuring Joss Stone 10. “Elegy For Dunkirk” featuring Olivia Safe In support of today’s album release, Beck’s publicity team kindly provided us with this clip of the masterful guitarist talking about his Fender gear with Alice Cooper. Jeff Beck and Alice Cooper Talk Fender Gear We’ve also got a lengthy Q&A with the guitarist in Fender News. Check it out here.

Jeff Beck Contributes Presets to the G-DEC® 3
Back in January at the 2010 Fender Showcase, we had the privilege of sitting backstage with Jeff Beck, his well-used signature Stratocaster, and a new G-DEC® 3 Thirty. He relentlessly manipulated the Strat’s strings, controls, and whammy arm with the strength of an engine mechanic while we tweaked the amp’s settings. Jeff explained to us that he has several go-to combinations of amp, rack effects and stomp boxes for specific songs and musical styles. Although we posted a quick video from his visit at the time, what we couldn’t say was that we saved five of these presets in the G-DEC and brought it back to Fender headquarters to prep as FREE downloads for Fender FUSE™, an online web community that was recently launched for G-DEC 3 owners. Fender FUSE is the place to get your G-DEC 3 connected with fellow users to trade amp presets, tips and tricks. You’ll also be able to download new presets, backing tracks, and other content directly from Fender. So get started with one or all five presets from one of the world’s top guitarists by clicking here. Here’s names and descriptions of each of the five presets: JeffBeckClean Jeff played the opening chords to “People Get Ready” when we set up this preset. It’s got a “rock-n-roll clean tone” with Blackface Drive amp type, Arena Reverb and very subtle delay and flanger effects added. JeffBeck Lead Jeff likes this type of gainy tone for nasty, finger-picked leads and double-stops. When we were creating this preset, he sometimes turned the tone control down on his Strat’s bridge pickup for a more growling sound. A Hall Reverb and a very subtle Delay round out this fine preset. JeffBeck Slap Jeff loves the original ’50s Rockabilly artists like Elvis, Johnny Burnette, and especially Gene Vincent’s Blue Caps, whose lead guitarist Cliff Gallup was a particular favorite. We dialed in this slapback preset while Jeff played a bunch of Cliff-like licks with his pinky nudging the vibrato bar throughout. JeffBeckTwdRv Jeff owns and uses several Fender Tweed amps, old and new. At his suggestion, we set up this preset which includes a Fender ’63 spring reverb in front of the amp, for an authentic old-school spank. JeffBeck Echo This is one of Jeff’s staple lead tones, a slightly overdriven tone with a long delay and some reverb. Many of his best-loved instrumentals like “Nadia” and “Where Were You” contain volume swells and chiming harmonics, enhanced by this setup. Jeff teased the Fender staff with hints of those songs while we crafted this preset. DOWNLOAD NOW!

Beck & Clapton Play Epic Madison Square Garden Concert
Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton took musical turns onstage at Madison Square Garden last night in one of the year’s most anticipated concerts. Beck opened the show with “Eternity’s Breath,” continuing on for another 40 minutes with an inspired performance that included a few songs off his upcoming April album (“Corpus Christi Carol,” “Hammerhead” and “Nessun Dorma”) and his recent Grammy-award winning cover of the Beatles’ “A Day in the Life.” Clapton began his turn with an acoustic shuffle of “Driftin’ Blues,” “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out,” “Running on Faith” and “I’ve Got a Rock and Roll Heart.” The legendary guitarist then plugged in his Fender Strat for a five-song set that included his popular cover of “I Shot the Sheriff.” Beck then rejoined Clapton onstage for the final segment of the show, ignited by an ethereal take on “Moon River.” You can watch the guitar icons running through this particular number during soundcheck here. Thanks to another fan in the crowd, you can also check out some of “I Want to Take You Higher.”
The former Yardbirds guitarists closed out the historical concert with “Crossroads.”

“It depends on if something is coming up,” said Beck about how much he practices. “I always get a little bit of a buzz in the stomach when I’ve got a tour or something exciting happening and so I play a lot more. Over the past decade, there’s been a lot of down time and a bit soul destroying––practicing for no apparent reason. But, you’ve got to do it. You have to learn to love what you do, otherwise you go downhill pretty fast. It’s like a disciplined exercise so I have a guitar in every room, on every sofa and every chair to remind me to get on with it. Not while in the car though…” WATCH A QUICK VIDEO CLIP OF BECK PLAYING ON FENDER VISION.

Fender would like to congratulate Jeff Beck for his recent Grammy nominated. Beck’s rendition of the Beatles’ classic “A Day in the Life” was selected to compete for a Grammy in the best rock instrumental performance category. Beck is competing for the award alongside Brad Paisley (”Playing with Fire”), Brian Setzer Orchestra (”Mr. Surfer Goes Jazzin’”), Steve Vai (”Now we Run”) and Booker T. Jones (”Warped Sister”). The winner will be announced on Jan. 31. In other Beck news, he and Eric Clapton recently announced three North American tour dates in 2010, a concert pairing that promises to be epic. The former Yardbirds will play New York’s Madison Square Garden on Feb. 18 and then head to Canada for shows in Toronto and Montreal. Prior to the shows in North America, the duo will perform two nights at London’s 02 Arena on Feb. 13-14. Although the legendary guitarists had played at festivals together in the past, February’s 2009 concerts at Japan’s super arena Saitama marked the duo’s first-ever major arena billing.

Ricky Minor… My kind of music hero.
I’ve added a new music hero to my short list. His name is Ricky Minor… and because he’s a long-time Reunion Blues endorser, I’m going to shamelessly plug this guy and his great work.
Through the years, my heros have included John Lennon, Stevie Ray, Bonnie Rait, Jeff Beck, Harry Nilsson, Billy Joel and Keb Mo… all great fronline personalities. Ricky Minor is not known as a front man. Instead, Rickey has proven himself to be one of the most versatile music directors in the music business. He’s collaborated with Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, and Sting. He’s produced music for the GRAMMY Awards, American Idol, the MTV Movie Awards, HBO... Most recently, he produced the music for Super Bowl XXXVI with the Boston Pops. He’s also one hellova bass player. - Check out his web site at http://www.RickyMinor.com
