Cool Car, Nice Drums, Great Engineering
I love great engineering whether it is high end cars or precision drum construction. Here is a really cool video that uses both! It is the official trailer for the new 2010 Porsche Boxster Spyder. Cut in with shots of the car driving on windy roads are close ups of a drummer doing his thing playing to the soundtrack. Lots of good “drum porn” such as kick drum beaters meeting the head and brushes on hi hats and the snare. And when the player’s tempo goes up and down, the car’s speed goes with it.

Gibraltar’s Extreme Hardware Makeover Video
Extreme Hardware Makeover is a new video to show drummers how they can customize their drum kits using Gibraltar’s endless hardware options for drum customization.
The inspiration for the video came from my own experiences. I am constantly building and rebuilding my hardware and rack set ups to explore new solutions for drummers to fit any playing style or any drum kit. I have to admit since I don’t perform as much these days, I am now that guy in the basement at night geeking out to discover something new I can do with drum hardware. So, I decided why not share some of the fun and see what we could do to solve someone else’s problems. So we conceived the Extreme Hardware Makeover video where drummers can see our process of analyzing a hard working kit and how we can improve the functionality and beauty of the drum kit set up.
Brent Barnett, our innovative designer at Gibraltar selected the perfect drummer for our show. Jagger Gonzales is a touring drummer with the progressive rock/metal band Opus Dai. Constant wear and tear on his set up created a fun challenge for us to see what we could do to help him. The band is constantly touring and we all know how rough this gets on our gear. Creative uses of duck tape and kitchen utensils were keeping broken parts of his drum rack alive but it definitely was on life support. Along with myself we had Gibraltar Hardware expert Jim Stanek to assist Brent in doing our make over at Chad Sexton’s Drum City in North Hollywood, Ca. Our goals were to make the kit more visually appealing while being more functional. We also needed to provide a way for Jagger to have a faster setup and tear-down as time is always tight at the shows. Take a look at our show and solutions and let us know what you think. Hope you enjoy it! Brent Sets Up A Gibraltar Drum Rack for Joey Bumpus
In this post, Brent Barnett, Artist Relations Specialist at Gibraltar Hardware, shows us how he put together Joey Bumpus’ (drummer for Lady Gaga) drum rack. Joey wanted to have everything curved. T legs were used, but pivoted slightly to accommodate the curve. Four vertical curved poles were mounted along the center bar for the cymbals, giving it an upside down spider-like effect. Curved bars make it difficult to keep other curved bars level. Brent solves this problem by checking the mounts with a level. The SC-GRSRA right angle clamps to connect the legs to the side extensions along with the SC-GPRML memory locks connecting to the outer legs. The SC-GPR30C curved 30-inch tube was added as a rear leg but about 5 inches were cut off with a saw. SC-RMAA and SC-RBA were added to the end of the cut tube to make it look clean and for mounting a boom, cymbals, or other 7/8 inch tube hardware. The SC-GRSARA angled clamp was used as the foot clamp to accommodate the curve being parallels to the foot, allowing the angle of the leg to be adjusted. A 30-inch curved bar was used to hold the no leg snare stand. The SC-GRSMC was used to connect the SC-EA100 to main rack to the no leg hi hat stand. GEMS mount is attached to the rack at the player’s right for a Roland SPD-S.

Get HD WordPress Video with VideoPress
You may have noticed that videos around here have been getting higher and higher quality. I don’t just mean the cool content from WordPress.tv, but the video player and video/audio quality itself. We’ve rewritten how videos work here on WordPress.com from the ground-up and taken inspiration from the great products at Vimeo and Smugmug, and are pleased to formally offer our video upgrade to everyone. Here’s a sample of what it can do especially for those sweltering in the heat right now:
With the video upgrade (available on your upgrades page, bottom left of dashboard navigation) when you upload a video of almost any format we’ll crunch it into several different formats just right for streaming on the web, DVD quality, HD quality, and even optimized for iTunes and Miro. Videos can be streamed and embedded here on WordPress.com or on any site around the world, even in full HD. The video feature was part of the space upgrade previously and for those that helped us test it we have now extended a one-year free video upgrade. We just want to make sure existing video users can continue to use it without any hassle. For new users, the video upgrade costs about 5 bucks a month. As an added bonus, each video has stats attached to it so you can see how often they’re being viewed, and more stats are coming. If you’d like to geek out, here’s some technical information about the encoding of videos and such, and the entire VideoPress WordPress video player and transcoder is under the GPL and open to the world. In the future we’ll be working on giving your viewers more options for streaming and downloading videos, better and more in-depth stats, more player customization, and a way for WordPress.org users to use and embed the new player easier.
